I feel lighter (with laughter) already! I found Shepherd Hoodwin’s latest book Enlightenment for Nitwits a fun, easy read. It’s Woody Allen meets Mad Magazine. Full of wit and witticisms for your inner nitwit!
— Nancy Lombardo, Comedy Concepts Radio, New York City
I love Enlightenment for Nitwits! It is the funniest book I have read in several decades. If laughter leads to enlightenment, it will certainly do it. Nothing—thank God—is sacred in this delightful spoof on life in general.

Enlightenment for Nitwits is full of priceless gems. It a great read, hugely entertaining, laugh-out-loud funny, but salted with sharp observations about the way we live now, the foibles and excesses of our society.
— Elizabeth Puttick, Ph.D, author of 7 Personality Types
I was delighted not only by his wit, but by a whole net of perceptions that trigger realizations, cognitions, and — dare I say — wisdom? In a world scarred by millennia of pretention and puffery, Shepherd’s gentle, witty wisdom-for-fun tends to erase such scars.
— John Dalmas, author of The Second Coming
Great book. Totally brilliant! It’s as if Shepherd channeled Dave Barry! We are reading it to each other and cracking up loudly. The house is ringing with laughter, and we both thank Shepherd for putting this out!

From “MOMS WITH VOICES” Book Tour, August, 2012
There was not one time as I was reading it that I stopped laughing. My four-year-old asked, “Mommy, are you okay?” I told him “Yes, Jack. Mommy is reading a very funny book.” Shepherd has a unique writing style that spoke to me personally. He’s the down-to-earth type of person who understands the world around him. This book is a satire on each aspect of modern human life—only a really well-rounded individual such as him could pull this off. I definitely recommend it!
— Amanda Seigler, http://www.ramblingsofafrugalmotheroffour.com
A Masterpiece of Wittiness
A brilliant and witty writer who also wrote Loving from your Soul and another of my favorites, Meditations for Self-Discovery is now presenting another masterpiece. I could not stop laughing. No matter what you are going through, Shepherd Hoodwin will surely cover it! A must read. I couldn’t put it down.
— Adriana Grillo, http://www.bargainsandgiveaways.com
Hilarious! I’m pretty sure my husband got irritated with me because I must have read half the book to him. Every time I found something funny, I wanted to share! The book is a collection of things he has written over the years to share with friends, and you can definitely tell! He writes like he was talking to a friend, and you see a lot of his wonderful personality throughout the book.
— Stacey Mosteller, http://couponingwithboys.com
Simply Jaw-Dropping and Hilariously Funny and Witty!
I was immediately drawn in by cover, and from the first page, I knew that this was not a typical how-to book. I was reading it every chance I could get, and had moments when my jaw dropped in complete shock. It is seriously hilarious. I found myself rereading particular topics because they were so awing that I had to make sure that I read the information correctly. This book is one that you can read when you’re downright feeling like crap and want to be amused. Did I feel “enlightened” after reading his book? In a weird way, yes! I found myself thinking about how we put so much emphasis on things that are really so silly to start with, but we think matter so much to our existence and daily living. So his raw and transparent techniques of writing actually planted seeds of enlightenment for me. If many other writers out there were brave enough to do the same, maybe we all could live in this world less judgmental and more accepting of one another and our differences.
— Selena Brown, http://blog.selenabrown.com
I was delightfully surprised by Enlightenment for Nitwits. It made me laugh out loud from the first page to the last. Literally. The last. The author actually added humor to the ordering page in the back of the book, and the endorsement page totally tickled me. By reading it, not only will you be sassier, but your spirit will be that much closer to wacky transcendence of time, space, and the everyday nonsense we forget to see the humor in. If you’re attracted to books that happily wander off the beaten path, chances are you’ll enjoy this one. Will you ascend to a higher plane of consciousness? Probably not without a strong pulley or controlled substances. BUT you will laugh—and I defy anyone to argue that laughter isn’t good for the soul.
— Jessi Arias-Cooper, http://mamasgotflair.com
Absolutely Amazing!
I have not laughed so hard in a long time! Just reading the introduction, I had already started laughing and had to share parts with people who were around me. I was so caught up in this book that I couldn’t wait for the end of the page to see what hilarious thing would be on the next! Just in the one sitting, I read over half of the book. I didn’t think I had been sitting there that long! This book is a wonderful compilation of stories, thoughts, and more. I highly recommend it to anyone who needs a good laugh and maybe even a look inside yourself. It brings up some great points that make you think from time to time. They are presented in a way that just reads with the book. It has such a wonderful flow!
— Erika Gilliam, http://www.livingfrugalwitherika.com
Awesomely Upfront and Honest!
I couldn’t even get through the introduction without breaking out into girly fits of giggles. I knew that this book would mesh perfectly with my personality, since it was written with such sarcasm but yet such sincerity at the same time. I expected to get bored after a few chapters as I do with a lot of “guide” books, but I couldn’t put this down. Some issues that were touched on actually surprised me and caused a few OMG!s to come out of my mouth. Shepherd simply puts it out there.

Hilariously Enlightening!
With the “end of the world” rapidly approaching, it seems everyone is looking for enlightenment. You can either go the longish route and spend hours a day meditating on the importance of nothingness, or you can fast-track your enlightenment and get a good laugh in the process. Enlightenment for Nitwits definitely supports the fast-track-while-laughing route. Lots of laughing. It is a hilarious book full off short quips and a few longer tales from the author’s own life and bizarre experiences. Somehow, it all works perfectly. I read Enlightenment for Nitwits in the dentist’s office while waiting for my son, in line at the post office, and pretty much everywhere else that I needed a quick laugh. I literally laughed out loud in quite a few parts, and I’m not typically an LOL type of girl. The message of enlightenment is definitely there, if you know how to look for it. Buried in each hilarious quip is a deeper message. Unfortunately, according to Hoodwin’s writings, it seems that while getting enlightenment to come to you is possible, getting Brad Pitt to do the same isn’t exactly as easy.
— Nicole Etolen, http://www.prettyopinionated.com
Shepherd Hoodwin really has a great message to deliver here: find enlightenment in all parts of your life, and do not let anything hold you down. I view the book as a journal of thoughts on every aspect of life (and when I say “every,” I mean every! There were a few wide-eyed moments!). This is a refreshing change from the traditional way of writing. I felt anticipation of what was to come from one paragraph to the next. The whole book is overflowing with points to ponder — some light, some deep — and is truly yoga for the engrossed soul.
— Michele Kaunitz, http://mommycouponswappers.net
This book cracks me up. If you’re put off by controversial topics like sexual preferences and religion, this is NOT the book for you — OR maybe it IS and you just don’t know it yet.

Funniest Book I’ve Read in Ages!
If you haven’t read Enlightenment for Nitwits, you really need to pick up a copy today. It has been years since I laughed this hard! This book is for those of us who either don’t have the time to mess with the long-term enlightenment courses and/or quests, or quite frankly, are just too lazy to mess with it at all. I laughed until I cried reading about the poor soul who called the Universe’s Customer Service line wanting to know exactly why she hadn’t found her soul mate yet. And again at the Universe’s poll results for customer satisfaction. I’m glad I read this book at home, because had I been in public, I’m pretty positive someone would have called the men in the little white twinkie truck with the cherry on top and the “I love me” jacket to take me away due to the fits of laughter I found myself in at times while reading this. Honestly, I just couldn’t put this book down until I’d read every last word! I highly recommend this book and give it 5 stars hands down!
— Marie DeWolfe, http://www.dixielandsdeals.com
Enlightenment for Nitwits is a great book! Fun, easy, hilarious, uplifting, sarcastic and quick-witted! Exactly what I feel I am ;). I read the book on lunch, at my desk (when I could), in the car, grocery store, just about anywhere you could possibly think of! I love the way it took me in one direction and then turned me around right away. I loved that while there were jokes in the book, the joke was sometimes on me. I laughed out loud multiple times. I will leave you now with one of my favorite “words of wisdom” from the book: “When your life goes down the drain, may the pipes be clogged.” I don’t know why I loved this so much but there it is, a great quote that made me laugh and giggle while people looked at me wondering what loony bin I escaped from.
— Ashley Lucas, http://www.readrateandreview.com
Are you in need of a break from the mundane? I certainly was and this guy was the perfect guy for the job. Just in case you don’t already know who he is, Shepherd Hoodwin is an author extraordinaire! His new book Enlightenment for Nitwits is the perfect foil for a difficult day. Flip to any page in the book and sit back and get ready to laugh your booty off! Just look at the cover and you’ll know that you are in for a fun ride! Sometimes you CAN judge a book by its cover and this is one of those times.
— Laura Frost, http://www.aglutenfreemom.com
Lighthearted and uplifting. A really good book if you need to lighten up. Recommended for everyone on any path in life.
— Susan Peck, http://coziecorner.blogspot.co.uk
The author understands that when you look at the world head on, you are missing the best parts of life. It is only when you look behind the obvious or up from the underbelly of a situation that you truly find something to “enlighten” you. Each chapter addresses a different topic and makes you think—and often, laugh out loud.
— Sharon Williams, http://hobbiesonabudget.com
I was so fortunate to be given Enlightenment for Nitwits. I, as a Christian, was cautiously optimistic. Now this book may not be for everyone, but it was written for me. With my sense of humor, it completely cracked me up on many different occasions. It’s more of a satire of every day life, broken down into different categories: coping, therapy, The Secret, life’s gifts, etc. I need lots of helpful coping strategies, therapy, etc.—and lots of laughter—so I read this book immediately. It is chock full of good advice for leading a happier life, even if you’re a nitwit. Get reading it so you can be enlightened, too! Thank you, Shepherd. After just losing my father, this book gave me a little reprieve and pick-me-up.
— Dina Demarest, http://morefrommom.com
The title doesn’t begin to capture the humor throughout this book! I wasn’t quite sure what I would find when I began reading, but quickly realized that this wasn’t like anything I have read before, and a book that I didn’t want to put down any time soon. The best way to read this book is to savor and enjoy every morsel of wit and humor by reading a part of it each day. You can meditate, pray, or arrange your furniture just so on your quest of self-help and personal growth, or you can have some fun in your journey and read Enlightenment for Nitwits. Shepherd’s seemingly random thoughts couldn’t have come together any better.

The Most Hilarious Enlightenment Ever
With a new baby around, I wasn’t able to do a lot of reading this summer, but I am so glad that I chose to read and review Enlightenment for Nitwits. I had tons of fun with it from cover to cover, and had no problem reading it while breastfeeding. Have you ever thought that enlightenment and entertainment can go hand in hand? This book will show you exactly how! It is a parody of the “For Dummies” and “Complete Idiot’s Guide” series. Allegedly designed to get you prepared for the 2012 Doomsday, it pokes fun at various aspects of modern life in an ostensibly innocent tone. I love the casual, conversational writing style and how elements of today’s society and technology have been discussed in a playful way. It is a fun and easy read, full of hilarious and witty one-liners that I couldn’t wait to share with anyone near me. I kept running over to my husband to share my favorite parts (there are so many of them!). It covers a lot of things that you wouldn’t expect from a book on enlightenment, from Brad Pitt to Craigslist. It is enlightening in its own right, besides lightening up my day with tons of good laughs, and has definitely exceeded my expectations.
— Bing Yuan, http://icefairystreasurechest.blogspot.co.uk
Laughing All the Way Through the Book!!
A very humorous and satirical look at what different people believe on their way to find enlightenment and make their lives better. I don’t know if, by laughing out loud at the humor, that is the road to enlightenment, or it just lifted my spirit, or maybe after all I am just a nitwit!
— Sharon Martin, http://beckvalleybooks.blogspot.co.uk
Two Hour Stand-Up in a book!
Shepherd Hoodwin has managed to shove a two-hour stand-up comedy routine into a book. I always keep a book in the bathroom, since I am in there so much. This book was perfect. It always left me laughing! Laughter is healing and I can use as much healing as I can get! So if you want to laugh in the bathroom (or any other room of the house), I suggest you pick up a copy of two for yourself. You could even get one for every room in the house!

Dry Humor at Its Best
Every now and then, you just need a book that will allow you to laugh at life and the silly idiosyncrasies that our society showcases on a daily basis. Enlightenment for Nitwits is one of those books! It will allow you to let your hair down, loosen your corset or tie, and find humor in your daily life. There is no vulgar, explicit, or inappropriate sexual content. The language is clean enough that I wouldn’t mind my kids reading it. This book is right up my husband’s alley. I’m excited to let him have a turn at it, now that I’ve finished laughing through every page.
— Amber Edwards, http://jadelouisedesigns.com
Ridiculous, Absurd, a Wee Bit Irreverent, and 100% Original!
Oh my goodness—this book is sooooo funny. I laughed until I cried. This book will blow your mind and burst your belly (from laughing so hard). Caution: Before reading, empty your bladder (if you don’t you’re sure to wet your pants), and get a box of tissues (or you’ll have tears running down your face), and DO NOT EAT OR DRINK, (because you’ll be sure to choke or shoot liquid out your nose. Yes, it’s THAT FUNNY. (Disclaimer: I did receive a copy of this book free of charge so that I could write this review. NO other compensation was received, except for an abundance of giggles and guffaws!) I’m a prude, and Hoodwin makes light of just about everything and everyone, but I personally only found a couple of sentences that I would have edited out.
— Libby Neas, http://libbyslibrary.com
I hoped this book was going to deliver, and boy did it ever. From the moment I cracked it open, I found myself sneaking in a few pages whenever I got a chance and LOLing. My kids found it very amusing for mom just to start busting up laughing for what appeared to be no reason at all. A little side note: my husband stole my book for himself!
— Elizabeth Trobaugh, http://mumblebeeinc.com
I. Couldn’t. Put. It. Down! I was literally laughing out loud—which is not a good thing when you are reading in bed at 11 p.m. while hubby is trying to sleep because he gets up at 3 a.m. for work (oops!). But it was so funny and so great, I had to share! It was unlike anything I have read. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with a laid-back, good sense of humor!
— Leila Brenner, http://lifeasleels.com
This was probably one of the most interesting and entertaining books that I have read in a long time. I almost read the book in one sitting, as once you start you can’t put it down. The author uses humor to convey messages about life, spirituality, politics, and anything else that you could possibly imagine. What I loved about this book was that the author didn’t hold back. He was direct and straight to the point with what he was discussing, which is something that I could personally appreciate. It had me laughing out loud, yet the reader completely understands the points the author is trying to convey. This book is full of a lot of great wisdom for leading a happier and more fulfilling life.
